Jose was born in the south of Spain, and was the 5th generation to enter hairdressing as a profession. After working in a range of salons in Madrid, Jose immigrated to Australia to work in a family-run salon in Sydney.
By the 1980’s, Jose moved to Centrepoint and worked for Daisy Bates and other city salons. Two years later, an opportunity arose for Jose to study as a community youth worker and launched Jose’s career in community social work. This involved developing and working on programmes for health, education and community services.
Jose still loved hairdressing and combined this with his community social work, by teaching vocational courses for disadvantaged young people in refuges, community heath units and any young people interested in pursuing hairdressing as a career. In addition, he continues to provide a mobile hairdressing service which enables the young disadvantaged people to have their hair care needs met on site. Jose continues to provide such vocational courses as workshops.
Jose is a freelance hairdresser two days a week. The rest of the week he works at the Chez Francois Salon in Hunters Hill.
